This song is the lead single from their fifth studio album. Chester Bennington explained in an interview with MTV News that the band chose this song as the first single because it shows everything they're hoping to accomplish on the new album.

Mike Shinoda explained one of possible meanings of this song saying, "...what we do in pop culture, where we build somebody up to be the next great thing and then we just like to destroy them at the end of the day, and we've lived through that."

Linkin Park and Lotus F1 team created a musical iPad app entitled "Linkin Park GP", where players could create a remix of "Burn It Down" while driving a Lotus E20.
